The design of connection nodes in steel bracing is a crucial aspect of ensuring the safety and reliability of the entire bracing system, requiring special attention to several aspects. First, the strength of the node must match that of the bracing member, capable of transmitting axial forces, bending moments, and shear forces, and avoiding becoming a weak point in the structure. Stress concentration at the node must be calculated during the design phase, and loads should be distributed using measures such as stiffening plates or ribs to prevent localized failure.

 

Second, the choice of connection method is critical. Common methods include bolted connections, welding, and pin connections. Bolted connections facilitate disassembly and adjustment, but the bolt grade and preload must meet requirements. Welded connections provide continuity and high strength, but welding quality and residual stress must be controlled. Pin connections are suitable for hinged nodes, allowing for some rotation, but the shear strength of the pin must be verified.

 

Third, the stiffness and flexibility of the node must be balanced. Overly rigid nodes may lead to stress concentration, while overly flexible nodes may cause excessive deformation. The constraints on the node should be determined based on the overall behavior of the bracing system during the design phase. For example, the node must be able to adapt to certain displacements due to temperature changes or foundation settlement. Furthermore, the structural details of the nodes cannot be overlooked, such as the arrangement of welds, the spacing and edge distance of bolts, and the implementation of anti-corrosion measures. These details directly affect the durability and fatigue life of the nodes.
